The Charge

To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we submit this vindication of the cause for which we fought, to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederat soldier's gppd name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetutation of these principles he loved andwhich made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations.

LTG Stephen Dill Lee, 1906

Quote from Private JohnH. Haley, Seventeenth Maine Regiment, U. S. A.

"If we of the North were called upon to endure one half as much of the Southern people and soldiers do we would abandon the cause and let the Southern Confederacybe established. We pronounce their cause unholy, but they consider it sacred enough to suffer and die for."
