Because this is the year of His Excellency President Jefferson Davis to us inthe SCV, my wife and I went to Beauvoir. Now That it is time for Camp Ford again, it brought to mind something I saw happened there last year. As we were walking up the hill to the cannons and the horses, we stopped to talk to the Commander of one of the Longview Camps. There was a man across the path giving a class on Flags of the Confederacy. He must have been a teacher or such because he was doing an outstanding job and several people and their children had stopped to listen. A Man walked up with about an eleven year ols girl and interrupted him and asked ,<"e>What is your view on Abraham Lincoln?"e> The compapatriot answered immediateley, "He was a despot!" The interrupter grabbed the little girl by the arm and quickly started up the hill announcing loudly, &quteI dont want her to hear something like that about Lincoln"e. "eWell if the shoe fits ole Dishonest Abe should have to wear it. Boothe may have killed the man butfor history he did Lincoln a great favor. I dont know if Lincoln would have given up being President or would he have been president for life. Maybe Sherman and Grant would have overthrownhim. Who Knows!. ANyway Boothe did him a big enough favor that men would rather their little girls hear alie than the truth. Be sure to read the article about young Jefferson Davis in this issue of the newletter.
This is the back of the property on Jefferson Davis' home. We couldn't take a picture of the brick the Rose purchased because theyhaven't placed then yet. But this is where they think they will be placed.
Ah! Fearless on many a day for us They stood in front of the fray for us, And held the foreman at bay for us, And tears should fall fore'er o'er all Who fell while wearing the grey for us all
"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish."
